Make Wash Day Fun

Mommy stop yanking my hair!
Brianna where are you girl? Why are you hiding, its time to wash your hair!
I used to have a neighbor who had a tough time when it came to washing her daughter’s hair on Sundays. The ritual was formed because she wanted her daughter’s hair fresh for school on Monday. However, her daughter who was ten at the time was finding wash day so stressful that she would hide in the bushes beside my yard. It had gotten so bad that the poor girl would hide …

I  recently gave my hair its yearly trim, it is something I do once for the year. For the the rest of the year, I do a thorough search and destroy so that I usually have no split ends, just scraggly looking unkempt, uneven ones by year end. I have resisted hairdressers and hair stylists who think that my hair needs to be trimmed, I usually tell them point blank, I do it myself, my hair ends might look scruffy but it does not have any splits.
The following is my …

Search and Destroy

If you want to get rid of split ends without losing much length you have to get them when they are new. You have to declare war on your split ends or they will devour your hair and you will have to end up cutting off more than you would like. This advice goes for both processed and unprocessed hair.
A few years ago I decided to inspect my mothers hair for split ends. Oh, it was awful; I had to cut off close to six inches of her hair because …

The strong hair relaxers on the market which many of us are slaves to, at times have damaged, broken, and stripped hair until its unrecognizable from our tightly curly kinky hair. Its no small wonder that there are persons who are constantly searching for a more natural, gentler way for black, afro- textured hair to be straighter or have more defined curls. Curly Hair

I get this question a lot mostly from persons who have a very beautiful head of natural hair. I generally ask a question to follow up, why do you want to relax your hair?
The thing is, if you are considering getting a chemical process done to your hair you should have some reason for doing so and you should be prepared for the process in order to keep your hair healthy and strong.
Many persons have different reasons for getting their hair relaxed, here are a few I’ve heard:

The hair is …

conditioner101

Conditioners are the holy grail for black hair because black hair needs moisture more than any other hair. You see, because of our curly hair texture, moisture does not readily travel to the ends of the hair like other hair types. Additionally, when we wash our hair with harsh shampoos we strip it of moisture and make a bad situation worse. Of course there are ways to get around this, you can pre-shampoo (pre-poo) with conditioner thus mitigate some of the harsh effects of shampoo or you can deep condition …

Oily Hair Causes

There are some persons who suffer from oily hair, a condition that can be just as irritating as dry hair. There are several causes for oily hair. Here are five:
1. Hormones
Oily hair is a direct result of extra sebum production. Sebum is produced naturally by the skin and usually the production of sebum is balanced. However, a fluctuation in hormone productivity can cause an excess generation of sebum in the sebaceous glands. This is what gives the condition of oily hair and skin.
Unlike dry hair, oily hair cannot take additional …

Dry Hair Causes and Treatment

When a person hair is dry, the hair looks lifeless and brittle. For some persons even after washing their hair and styling it, the hair feels dry and looks like it has no sheen. Naturally, there are some hair types that are more prone to dryness than others e.g. very tightly curly hair because the hair’s natural oil does not reach the ends of the hair shaft adequately. In cases like these, natural and relaxed hair women have to take extra care with adding back moisture to the hair. However, …

infusium23

Should you use leave-in conditioners? If you asked me this question four months ago the answer would be yes. My hair regime used to be: lather… rinse… repeat, condition in the shower, add Infusium 23 to my wet hair and torture it for two hours under the dryer and then top it off with with some carrot hair oil.
These days my regime is a bit different, I have tweaked it to the point where I unintentionally left out my leave-in conditioner and guess what? My hair doesn’t miss it! Most …

Girl Washing Hair

For the record, I do not use commercial shampoos, if I can avoid them. The cheaper the shampoo the more it seems to strip the hair and damage it. I am determined to phase them out of my hair regimen since my hair does so much better without them. I wash my hair with homemade recipes or I use a very weak, heavily diluted non-sulfate, non-ammonium, shampoo to wash my hair when I can’t get what I want. There are some  ingredients in commercial shampoos that aren’t really the best  …
