Castor Oil Hair Benefits

Castor oil is liquid gold for hair, it was used thousands of years ago by the Egyptians for healthy hair and it is still around today because in the 21st century it still works like a charm, for not only hair but also the skin.

Castor oil is thick, golden in appearance and is the by-product of the castor plant. A plant that is not without some controversy because of certain toxic compounds which can be found on the surface of the castor bean.

Why is castor oil so special? It contains a rare fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, it can be found only in castor oil and a group of fungi called ergot. Due to its high ricinoleic acid content castor oil exhibits strong pain-killing, anti microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Castor Oil Hair and Skin Benefits

  • Castor oil has a small molecular size, this means that it penetrates easily, deeply and quickly into the skin. This makes it one of the super penetrative carrier oils besides coconut and olive oil.
  • Castor oil soothes inflamed skin including the hair scalp.
  • Castor oil provides a moisturizing effect to hair and scalp, because of its penetrative qualities castor oil does not only coat the hair strand but enters the cuticle imparting its numerous minerals and nutrients thus guaranteeing long lasting hydration and nutrition to hair and scalp.
  • Castor oil thickens and promotes hair growth even in places where hair would not grow before. Castor oil can also be used to thicken other areas where hair is sparse on your body like your eyebrows and eyelashes.
  • Castor oil can repair chemical damage due to hair abuse with regular use. The omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil also nourishes the hair and prevents the scalp from drying out.
  • Castor oil is a humectant as it draws moisture into the hair and skin. Applying castor oil on hair will keep it soft and supple.

What is the best castor oil to use?
A cosmetic or therapeutic grade castor oil is best for hair care. You can use cold pressed or castor oil done the Jamaican way, which is roasting the beans and then pressing the seeds, this castor oil is darker in color and very thick. This oil works extremely well on hair.

A quality cold pressed castor oil has a clear, yellow color with a mild, natural plant odor. After the castor oil is applied, it should not have lingering scent. This cold pressed type is said to work best on skin especially when placed around the eyes to reduce wrinkles or dark spots.

Castor Oil Suggestions they are both very good:

    Hi,

How do I use the castor oil?

Do I add it to my hair food?
Do I apply as is to my scalp? How often?
Do I apply it to my hair ends? How often?

    Thanks,

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Tebogo,
You can use the castor oil as you would your regular hair oil. I don’t recommend using oils directly on the scalp unless you are going to wash it out like the day after. If you apply it to your hair ends, use a little spray mist with water just to dampen the hair a bit and then use the castor oil. How often is totally up to how your hair looks and feels.

    Hello,
    Thanks for your valuable information.
First of all iam 24 years male. I have this problem where my hair density is very low. Also I have oily kind of dandruff. When I scatch my scalp with my nails, I can see the dandruff inside the nails. How can I treat this, both hair density and the dandruff issue?
    Will castor oil help me?

    Hi Brenda,
I am 27. Since last one year I have been losing hair at the vertex and the temple. I am afraid that before 30 I might go entirely bald. Dandruff and itchy scalp is main reason. Please suggest whether castor oil would be helpful in my case? If yes, then how to use it?Can hair regrowth be expected out of it?

Firstly let me say i just love your website, its been a great help.

Are you saying that the darker Castor Oil is better than the golden colored one?? A friend mentioned it but I’ve only seen it once and when I went back to buy it, it was gone…
If its the better of the two I’d definitely look around and try to get it.

Hi! Ok I was recently told that castor oil helps hair growth and about a month ago I went natural finally and cut my hair off. So I went to Walmart and Sally’s and they didn’t have the castor oil that I was looking for so I finally went to CVS and they had castor oil but it was the laxative. I did more research while In the store and it said that that should be fine. It stated castor oil is castor oil so it will do the same thing. Is this true?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Mia,
It should work. I had the same issue and its true- castor oil is castor oil. I ran out of castor oil and had to use the laxative. The difference with the normal castor oil(used in hair) and the one to be taken internally is that the internal one has to be of the finest quality. I found it thicker than normal so I used a little less.

  • Kelly said:

    Hi

I am a south african female with thinning, almost gone hairline. Can I use the normal castor oil or does it have to be the jamaican black castor oil? Again, do u by any chance have an idea of where in south africa can I get the jamaican black castor oil?

    Regards
    Kelly

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Kelly,

Any real castor oil will do. I ran out of castor oil some time ago and I went to the pharmacy and got the one that can be taken internally. It did its job, though it was a lot thicker than the Jamaican Black.

    Hi Brenda,
I am suffering from dandruff and also getting bald will castor oil can solve both of my problems ? if yes then after how many months it will take to regrow

    Thanks

  • Monica said:

Oil treatments are good but I wouldn’t use any other oils other than argan oil which is lighter and it actually has more benefits. I used one called Pro Natural’s argan oil and you don’t even have to leave it in as a mask for hours, you just put some on your hair after a shower and thats it, it wont make your hair greasy or smelly. I got it online, they have argan oil shampoo and hair masks if you want. Also eat lots of protein and massage your scalp every night to stimulate growth. Keep getting small trims every few months too.
