Castor Oil Hair Benefits

Castor oil is liquid gold for hair, it was used thousands of years ago by the Egyptians for healthy hair and it is still around today because in the 21st century it still works like a charm, for not only hair but also the skin.

Castor oil is thick, golden in appearance and is the by-product of the castor plant. A plant that is not without some controversy because of certain toxic compounds which can be found on the surface of the castor bean.

Why is castor oil so special? It contains a rare fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, it can be found only in castor oil and a group of fungi called ergot. Due to its high ricinoleic acid content castor oil exhibits strong pain-killing, anti microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Castor Oil Hair and Skin Benefits

  • Castor oil has a small molecular size, this means that it penetrates easily, deeply and quickly into the skin. This makes it one of the super penetrative carrier oils besides coconut and olive oil.
  • Castor oil soothes inflamed skin including the hair scalp.
  • Castor oil provides a moisturizing effect to hair and scalp, because of its penetrative qualities castor oil does not only coat the hair strand but enters the cuticle imparting its numerous minerals and nutrients thus guaranteeing long lasting hydration and nutrition to hair and scalp.
  • Castor oil thickens and promotes hair growth even in places where hair would not grow before. Castor oil can also be used to thicken other areas where hair is sparse on your body like your eyebrows and eyelashes.
  • Castor oil can repair chemical damage due to hair abuse with regular use. The omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil also nourishes the hair and prevents the scalp from drying out.
  • Castor oil is a humectant as it draws moisture into the hair and skin. Applying castor oil on hair will keep it soft and supple.

What is the best castor oil to use?
A cosmetic or therapeutic grade castor oil is best for hair care. You can use cold pressed or castor oil done the Jamaican way, which is roasting the beans and then pressing the seeds, this castor oil is darker in color and very thick. This oil works extremely well on hair.

A quality cold pressed castor oil has a clear, yellow color with a mild, natural plant odor. After the castor oil is applied, it should not have lingering scent. This cold pressed type is said to work best on skin especially when placed around the eyes to reduce wrinkles or dark spots.

Castor Oil Suggestions they are both very good:
Pure Cold Pressed Castor Oil—ย  Heritage Store Castor Oil, 32 Ounce

Roasted Beans, Darker Castor Oil— Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil 4oz

        • Brenda Barrett said:

          Hi Linda,
I have never known of a case where castor oil lifts the hair color. Both coconut and castor oil work well together. All the best.

How do I use the castor oil?

Do I add it to my hair food?
Do I apply as is to my scalp? How often?
Do I apply it to my hair ends? How often?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Tebogo,
You can use the castor oil as you would your regular hair oil. I don’t recommend using oils directly on the scalp unless you are going to wash it out like the day after. If you apply it to your hair ends, use a little spray mist with water just to dampen the hair a bit and then use the castor oil. How often is totally up to how your hair looks and feels.

      • Diya said:

hey, is it always necessary to wash off the oil after application??
can castor oil be used as a remedy for premature greying?? will it be effective??
what other remedies will u suggest for premature greying?

        • Brenda Barrett said:

          Hi Diya,
No it is not always necessary to wash off the oil after application. I don’t think castor oil by itself will stop pre-mature greying.

Firstly let me say i just love your website, its been a great help.

Are you saying that the darker Castor Oil is better than the golden colored one?? A friend mentioned it but I’ve only seen it once and when I went back to buy it, it was gone…
If its the better of the two I’d definitely look around and try to get it.

  • Mia C said:

Hi! Ok I was recently told that castor oil helps hair growth and about a month ago I went natural finally and cut my hair off. So I went to Walmart and Sally’s and they didn’t have the castor oil that I was looking for so I finally went to CVS and they had castor oil but it was the laxative. I did more research while In the store and it said that that should be fine. It stated castor oil is castor oil so it will do the same thing. Is this true?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Mia,
It should work. I had the same issue and its true- castor oil is castor oil. I ran out of castor oil and had to use the laxative. The difference with the normal castor oil(used in hair) and the one to be taken internally is that the internal one has to be of the finest quality. I found it thicker than normal so I used a little less.

      • Tina Butler said:

When I was young my grandma used castor oil the laxative one on my hair and hair grew long past bra lenght this wa

  • Kelly said:

I am a south african female with thinning, almost gone hairline. Can I use the normal castor oil or does it have to be the jamaican black castor oil? Again, do u by any chance have an idea of where in south africa can I get the jamaican black castor oil?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Kelly,

Any real castor oil will do. I ran out of castor oil some time ago and I went to the pharmacy and got the one that can be taken internally. It did its job, though it was a lot thicker than the Jamaican Black.

Oil treatments are good but I wouldn’t use any other oils other than argan oil which is lighter and it actually has more benefits. I used one called Pro Naturalโ€™s argan oil and you don’t even have to leave it in as a mask for hours, you just put some on your hair after a shower and thats it, it wont make your hair greasy or smelly. I got it online, they have argan oil shampoo and hair masks if you want. Also eat lots of protein and massage your scalp every night to stimulate growth. Keep getting small trims every few months too.

      Hi Prakriti,

JBCO with lavender may be too harsh for your eyelashes. Just plain JBCO would be better because the JBCO with lavender may be an irritant to your eyes. Put it on overnight for your eyebrows and use it sparingly and you should be fine.

hi Brenda does castor oil work well on relaxed hair and how long do I need to apply it for my hair to grow and how long can it grow within 3 months.but which is faster coconut oil or castor oil

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Kamsy,
It works well on relaxed hair, apply it for as long as you need to. Average hair growth is 1/2 inch per month your hair will probably grown to an inch and a half in three months. I don’t think that either castor oil or coconut oil will affect the rate of your hair growth. It all depends on your personal preference when using either of them.

  • Nana said:

      Hi Nana,
There is no need to use it throughout the day it won’t make it work faster. Just apply it to the area after moisturizing it and you should be fine till wash day. Trust me, it will still work.

      Hi Loretta,
I too have frizzy hair and i have started using castor oil since 3 weeks now (i use it twice a week). It did control the frizz but just to a limited extent. I would suggest you to use conditioners one a week for the frizz issue or any deep conditioning remedy might help. But I would say castor oil has uplifted the shine and my previously damaged hair feel somewhat soft now. Since its just 3 weeks that i used it, it would take some time to show its effects. Hope that works for you ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hi Antonio,
Yes you can use it as a leave in and no, you don’t have to wash it out. Moisturize first with water (spritz, mist some water on your hair for moisture) before you use the oil. Much more effective this way when used as a leave in.

    Hi Ma’am
    thanks for these advices.
I bought a castor oil bottle from a chemist shop. it’s laxative one.
the labe says CASTOR OIL I.P .. (what does IP mean?)
can I use it for my eyelashes and for a wart that’s on my eyelid?
and how many times in a week shall I do it?
Your advice will be highly appreciated.
I am 19 year old Indian here.

      Hi Aisha,

Pharmaceutical Grade Castor Oil is the first pressing of the Castor seed, this process preserves the medicinal qualities of the oil.
IP means it is Indian Pharmaceutical grade. You might see others with BP, USP (British Pharmaceutical, United States Pharmaceutical)…Yes, you can use it for your eyelashes, please do not let it get into your eyes. I have never used it before for my eyelashes, I can’t advise on the frequency of use but I have heard that it works really well for warts.

Hello Ms.Brenda Barrett, my hair been relaxed for so many years, first time using black African castor oil, will it damage my hair? Can I mix coconut oil with. Leave in over nite?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Lynn,
Yes you can mix them both and you can leave them in overnight. Put a plastic cap over it and you get a hot oil treatment.

hi guys. I have been using Castor Oil for 2 weeks and I haven’t seen any much of a difference, am just wondering when one should expect to see results because my main focus is my hairline. Also, I was looking at protective styling and am wondering if braids are the best way to go while am treating my scalp with JBCO

Is castor oil also good for relaxed hair?

  • Angela said:

But castor oil is comedogenic so I think you should be really careful where you place it especially if your skin is prone to acne.

    Hii brenda ,
My hair were damaged due to poor water.
