Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Hair is on the mildly acidic side of the pH scale and has an ideal pH of 4.5 to 5.5, which is close to that of an apple cider vinegar hair rinse (pH 2.9). Many of the hair care products on the market today, such as soap-based shampoos, bleaches, hair colors, and permanents are strongly alkaline. Rinsing with apple cider vinegar will help balance the pH of your hair and remove the buildup that can result from the use of these styling products and inexpensive shampoos.

Ingredients:

1 cup apple cider vinegar

2 tsp. organic lemon juice.

3 cups waterApple Cider Vinegar For Hair Care

Method:

Mix apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and water together thoroughly. Hang hair over bath and slowly pour over head massaging as you go along. Close eyes, this will sting if it gets into your eyes.

hi again, how many times should l pour this over my head? and should i rinse this out? thanx

    • Brenda said:

You can rinse it out with plain water just once to remove the ACV scent, you don’t have to though.

Can I use this rinse after the protein conditioner?

Yesterday I used a deep protein conditioner and could not comb out my hair :-( … I didn’t kno I need to add another conditioner to it or something else.

What would you recommend for a de-tangler or something to coat my FINE hair strands to get that “hairdresser” feel?

    • Brenda said:

After a protein conditioner, you definitely need to give hair some moisture. You can use a moisturizing conditioner to give you that silky feel after a protein treatment, there are tons on the market. Yes you can use apple cider vinegar rinse after a DC, it also works well to give you that silky feel.

I recently have a TWA, and want my hair to grow back (I know, time will tell). Why is it important NOT to use products with protien in it and is there a list of dos and don’ts we should look out for in shampoos, conditioners, and styling products? Thank you!

I’v been usin some of ur recipes n its been workin bt its hard to get some of the ingredients here esp the essential oils… I was usin organic root stimulator to relax my hair bt I had to change cos I had a lot of dandruff n smeone recommended profective mega growth creme relaxer, I use that now on my hair n it like immediately after I can still feel some of the undergrowth in diff parts of my hair, even after it burns my scalp, thats very frustratin.
I mix my hair cream profective daily anti-breakage strengthner with local shea butter, ollive oil n coconut oil….
I braid my hair most of the time cos its the only waay I can deal with it n I weave my natural hair n sometimes fix it to stretch ou the time btw relaxers.
        I relax 4times in a yr n i’m tryin to stretch it to 3…..
my scalp is soo itchy I cant stand it most times n when I itch it I hurt myslf smetimes……
i’v noticed considerable improvements since I started usin some of ur recipes n i’m soo grateful( thinkin of makin my own hair care products at home lond as I can find the ingredients)
sorry its so long I just had to cram most of it in here n i’ll be grateful if u can give me some tips on the itchy scalp n how to get my hair properly relaxed n not burnt…..

Hi thank you for all of the information about black hair products and how to take care our hair everyday. My question is can I mix Apple Cider with the castile soap at the same time every week? or do it seperate.

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Gia,
Do it separate. For soft- really soft hair, I wash with Castile Soap, then I rinse with ordinary water. Afterwards, I rinse with a 1.5 litre bottle of diluted ACV (I simply put about a 1/4 of ACV in a water bottle I am not using for anything else. Fill the bottle with filtered water and bring this to the shower). After this I either condition with regular conditioner or do a deep condition. My hair after this is super soft.

  • Lunye' said:

Thanks for the information. I began my transition December 8th. I had not had a touch up to my relaxer for about 2 months before that. I have not had any heat in my hair since I started and have been deep conditioning every week faithfully (except last week, but I did cowash then). I was thinking about doing this rinse this weekend and keeping my hair in a bun this whole month. Is it o.k. if I deep condition with my oils and then use this rinse afterwards? Do you have any advice for the relaxed ends of my hair. Some weeks they have been fine and others too greasy (the reason for me looking into this rinse).

    Thanks,

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Lunye,
I am sure by now you have experimented with the rinse and seen that it makes the hair feel balanced in general. Sorry for the late reply.

    Hi Brenda,
Am having hair fall problem, because of dandruff so i checked doctor. they suggested shampoo after using that shampoo shall i use this apple cider vinegar for my hair

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Padma,
I would recommend using a conditioner, especially if you are told to wash your hair more than three times for the week and then the ACV rinse at the very last after the conditioner.

  • kyle said:

its ok to use in genital warts? answer please…

  • Aejha said:

    Hi,
I’ve never used an ACV rinse before and I was wondering if I could still shampoo and condition my hair as well as do the rinse. I have natural hair and it’s on the thicker side so I was just wondering if it’s ok to do all three.
    thanks :)

    Hi Brenda,
it’s my first time on your site.
I am looking for ways to moiturize and take care of my very LOW porosity natural hair.
Would you recommend ACV for low porosity hair?
    Thank you.

  • Tia said:

    HI,
My hair is relaxed can I just use the avc on my scalp without wetting my hair?
    Thanks

  • Tia said:

Also, can avc be use as a moisturizer?

  • isis said:

Thank you for posting about ACV wash.
How often should I wash my TWA.
I have noticed a little bit of product build up at the end of the day.

  • Lynda Wristberg said:

How can i use the ACV rinse on my 5 month transitioned hair.

  • april said:

Hi..can I use it on my dyed hair?

  • djm said:

My hair is really over conditioned and will now not hold a curl of wave. What should I use after I rinse with the ACV? Appling a conditioner seems to defect the purpose of doing the rinse. I also am going to put in a home relaxer can you tell me the best products to use.

  • mimilav said:

Hi, my hair is relaxed. I relax every 6weeks because of new growth. I have a lot of issues with dandruff. For the past 3 weeks I have been doing olive oil, castor oil, and essential oil hair masks, shampoo, and ACV and EO final rinse that I leave in. My hair stays dry afterwards and still have a lot of shedding during the week. What am I doing wrong? Also if I leave the rinse in, will it affect my hair when I get a relaxer? Thanks in advance!

  • Monica said:

My hair doesn’t get relaxed often. I wear sew-ins a lot. I did get a relaxer about 3 weeks ago and my hair is so rough. It’s not smooth at all. I can also see some shedding. What can I do?

  • Paula said:

Hi Brenda. Can I use a hair rinse to color my hair and rinse with apple cider vinegar?

    • Brenda Barrett said:

      Hi Paula,
Do you mean after you put on the rinse? yes it can be used, the acid will close the hair shaft. However regular use of ACV after a hair rinse will strip the hair of the rinse.
